"Somewhere to Disappear" at the DFT

Minneapolis-based photographer Alec Soth will present a lecture on his photographic work, exhibitions and publications from the last 15 years. The lecture will be followed by a screening of the documentary film "Somewhere to Disappear", by Laure Flammarion and Arnaud Uyttenhove with Alec Soth. The film follows photographer Alec Soth as he works on his project, "Broken Manual." This program is presented by the Forum for Prints, Drawings, and Photographs and the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography. The lecture is sponsored by Amerisure. Funding for the film has been provided by the DCCP.
Alec Soth
Born in 1969 in the United States, Alec Soth lives and works in Minneapolis. He is part of the younger generation of American photographers. His work attracted considerable attention, and has received several awards: The McKnight Foundations and the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2003. He is represented in several private and public collections, and the prestigious Gagosian Gallery in New York. Alec Soth is a member of Magnum Photos.
His photographs have their roots in the tradition of Walker Evans, Robert Frank, and Stephen Shore. His portrayal of daily lives accentuates the ideals of independence, freedom, spirituality, and individualism of the American society.
