In 1988 photographer
Paul D'Amato began to photograph the Pilsen neighborhood on Chicago's lower west side. At the turn of the century, the majority of Pilsen's inhabitants were eastern European immigrants working in the stockyards and surrounding factories. Since the 1970's Latinos have made up the majority of Pilsens population.
For the next fourteen years D'Amato would make continuous visits to the neighborhood to photograph the intimate details of both public and private life within the neighborhood.
In 2006, D'Amato published the monograph
Barrio: a visual narrative made up of ninety color photographs, that faithfully record the complexities of this diverse and lively neighborhood.
