Today is the birthday of Garry Winogrand. He would have been 86 years old. What a short and productive life he had.
When I feel timid or unsure of how to approach a subject on the streets. When I get to the point where are am feeling anxious about what will follow, I think of Winogrand and his reckless and carefree approach to engaging his subjects.
For Winogrand, photography was a natural extension of who he was, and his intuitive nature didn't allow for hesitation or timidness when taking pictures. His approach has had a strong influence on me personally. There are other photographers whose work I identify with more, but no other photographer has had such an infectious love for photography as Winogrand did, and for that I stand in awe.
Happy Birthday Garry.
