Film Screening @ UMMA
Two documentary films worth checking out, will be playing at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, on November 20th, 2012 @ 7pm.
Maya Lin; A Strong Clear Vision (1996, 60 minutes) is an Academy Award winning documentary film directed by Freida Lee Mock, about sculptor and architect Maya Lin, who at age 21, designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. The film tells the gripping story behind what was originally a bitterly disputed monument, which became one of the worlds most inspirational and frequently visited monuments. The director explores a decade in the life of a visionary artist, as she explores new aesthetic territory, fusing art and ideals, to create provocative works that engage the viewer.
Andre the Giant has a Posse (1997, 16 minutes) This award winning short film by Helen Stickler, chronicles the contemporary street artist Shepard Fairey's Obey Giant sticker campaign, which began in 1989 while he and some fellow students were attending the Rhode Island School of Design. The sticker attempts to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the sticker and their relationship to their surroundings. Because people are not used to seeing advertisements or propaganda for which the product or motive is not obvious, frequent and novel encounters with the sticker provoke thought and possible frustration. The sticker has no meaning but exists only to cause people to react, to contemplate and search for meaning in the sticker. Since its inception the Obey Giant icon has gone on to become an international phenomenon.
The film will be showing at the UofM Art Museum, in the Helmut Stern Auditorium @ 7pm. The museum is located at 525 S. State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109
