Jumbo's Bar, Cass Corridor, Detroit

©tom stoye

Before Cass Corridor was gentrified, Jumbo's Bar was a neighborhood dive bar with a reputation. I haven't set foot in that bar since the early eighties, and since then, much has changed in the corridor.

Most of the dive bars are gone now, and with it all of the tenant buildings that housed the cast of characters that filled the local bars and tenant buildings; a combination of crack heads, drug dealers, musicians and artists. Alvin's Twilight Bar, The Gold Dollar, Anderson's Garden, Cobb's Corner and the Willis Gallery are all history now, but the Jumbo still stands for some inexplicable reason.
