2014 Detroit Jazz festival

©tom stoye

Another great Detroit Jazz Festival, although the big name acts seemed scant when compared to previous years.  Nonetheless, there were plenty of good acts to see.

The highlight at this years festival was Pharaoh Sanders, whose band was thoroughly engaging, playing through a set that featured some old classics and some experimental numbers that highlighted the solo talents of its band members.

This years festival was unfortunately cut short by a late night thunder storm that ended up with the cancellation of Stanley Clarke's set. Unfortunately, the promoters where over an hour late getting the band on stage, and one had to wonder if they couldn't have fit his act it into the schedule if they would have got the band on stage in a timely manner. Either way, I'm anxiously awaiting next years lineup.
