This photo was taken at Polonia's, a Polish restaurant in Hamtramck, Michigan. Oddly, it's the only booth in the restaurant that has a decorative figure in it. This is the table I would request when I went there to eat, because I felt a certain affinity to the man in the box and the mystery surrounding him. I've always fixated on it, because there's no logical correlation between the figure and it's relationship to the country of Poland that I can figure out; but somehow his presence is comforting to me. There he sits, with a quiet and comforting resolve, hanging from the lattice, washed in the warmth of a cheap restaurant lantern, seemingly placed there just for him.
About a year ago, the owner took this table out of circulation for the patrons of the restaurant. It's now reserved for employees to sit in, who can often be seen counting their tips or just hanging out talking to each other. It feels odd to me that I can't eat at this table anymore- my favorite booth now forced into an early retirement.
